“Unto thee will I cry, O LORD my Rock; be not silent to me: lest, if Thou be silent to me, I become like them that go down into the pit. Hear the voice of my supplications, when I cry unto Thee, when I lift up my hands toward Thy holy oracle. Draw me not away with the wicked, and with the workers of iniquity, which speak peace to their neighbours, but mischief is in their hearts. Give them according to their deeds, and according to the wickedness of their endeavours: give them after the work of their hands; render to them their desert. Because they regard not the works of the LORD, nor the operation of His hands, He shall destroy them, and not build them up. Blessed be the LORD, because He hath heard the voice of my supplications. The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in Him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise Him. The LORD is their strength, and He is the saving strength of His anointed. Save Thy people, and bless Thine inheritance: feed them also, and lift them up for ever.”(Psalm 28).
You and I, in fact this entire world, all have one desperate need. So many conferences have been held, so many negotiating tables have been sanctioned, so many billions of dollars have been spent, so many wars have been fought, so many politicians have risen and fallen, yet this one dire need still escapes the human race. It is such an elusive need that many people have actually put it out of their minds because they have come to believe it is a useless and futile endeavor. The mind seems to rule it out yet the heart yearns for it almost every minute of our day.
What is this one need that demands so much from us, yet seems to elude us? PEACE, real PEACE! Think for a moment just how much time, energy, money and even wars have been invested in the pursuit of peace, yet our world seems to burning down around us. Think of all the political “stump” speeches have drawn so many people and so much news ink, only to be just another flop on the top of untold millions before.
Why is peace so vital to us, yet we seem to never obtain it? What is it about peace that makes our hearts yearn so for it, but we don’t ever find it in this world? I mean, surely someone, somewhere would come up with a formula to unlock this most desirable of goals! And yet after all these thousands of years, no one has come up with the key that unlocks this ONE most yearned-for objective!
The Psalmist faced such a pursuit as ours. He was constantly bombarded with attacks, vocal and real, that threatened his peace of mind, yea, even his life, and he cried out in sheer desperation for some relief.
But, unlike most of the modern world, he knew where he could find the peace that he heart so cried out for. “Unto THEE will I cry, O LORD MY Rock…”. Notice the confidence he expressed in this cry. He knew that his “…LORD…” was also his “…Rock…”.
“Upon this Rock I will build MY Church…” Jesus said so many years later, adding that even the “…gates of hell…” would not be able to overcome or to overturn this Rock(Matt.16:18). Jesus assured His disciples, and us, that truly there is a peace that will calm the most storm-plagued heart, and that peace is a “ROCK”!
Jesus also said, “These things I have spoken unto you, that in Me ye might have peace. In the world, ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”(John 16:33; a verse every believer should memorize).
Paul wrote of this “…Rock..” as being “…our peace…”(Eph.2:14); that this “…Rock…” is the “…peace of God that passeth all understanding..”(Phil.4:7); that this “…Rock…” “…made(created) peace through the blood of His Cross…”(Col.1:20); that this “…Rock…” “…shall be with you.”(Phil.4:9).
And, one day, this “…Rock…” will sit as Ruler over all this world and the universe as “…KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”(Rev.19:16)!
Horatio Spafford stood in the deck of an ancient ship over the place where a severe storm had swept his two daughters overboard. As he stood there that day grieving over the loss of his only two children, he was moved to write the words of that wonderful and powerful hymn that has thrilled so many saints through the years. “When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll; Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well with my soul.”
Jesus, being that “…Rock..” really is our stability in this dark and sin-cursed world. So many saints through the years have learned that they really can stand on this “…Rock…” and be filled with His peace and be secure. It is true that we can stand on this “…Rock…” and know that all is “…well with my soul! And, beloved, always remember this, WE MAY FALL ON THE “…ROCK…”, BUT WE WILL NEVER FALL OFF THIS “…ROCK…”!!
And is it not true that the peace of which this dear brother wrote so many years ago has proven to be the solid “…Rock…” upon which so many of us have stood in so many instances in life, and have, along with the Psalmist, lifted our song of praise to Him?? Is it not true that so many times when this life, this world, our own sin have dealt us so much pain and sorrow that we looked to this same “…Rock…” and found that “peace of God”, simply because we had already found “…peace with God…”(Rom.5:1)??
