Whatever Happened to “Liberty”?

Word of the Day

“Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”(John 8:32,36).  “…where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”(II Cor.3:17).

When President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, there was much rejoicing among the African slaves, because now they were as free as their owners were and they no longer had to be enslaved by them or anyone else.

God has built into the life of every person the longing to be free. Nations today are still having to deal with internal uprisings because they have tried to hold their people as slaves of the state. And that desire to breathe free still cries out from the human heart.

Here in America, a war was fought bitterly and won simply because unfair taxation was placed upon the early settlers. Of course, the British Crown had oppressed the settlers and that taxation was the last straw. So, our forefathers decided to stand up and do something about it, at great risk and cost to themselves.

History records many brutal, violent and devastating wars that were fought simply because the populace wanted to breathe free. When America was becoming a world dominating power, millions flooded to our shores because of this heart-felt longing. And under this liberty many of them worked hard, lived clean lives and prospered, which is why they sacrificed to come here.

But now in this once-great land, freedom has become a lost jewel among the elected “elites”, the young people who pursue only fame and fortune, those who are dependent upon the state for sustenance, the courts who overstep their Constitutional role by imposing their own laws and by White House occupants who glory in their own new-found power.

God knew full well about the longing of the human heart and He knew all along how tyrants would try to squelch that longing. He knew how this longing would drive humanity to the brink of destruction as we pursued this deep heart longing. So, He put His plan for our freedom into motion in an obscure little village in the remote land know as Israel.

In that out-of-the-way place, a young couple brought forth their First-born Son; a Child that had long been promised to the world. That Son was, and is, indeed, the Son of the Living God, Who came to set men free from all oppression, including the worst of oppressors, human sin.

That Son lived a sinless life(believer it or not), revealed the Eternal God to the entire human race, and then He was executed on a cruel Roman Cross outside Jerusalem. The entire citizenry demanded His death, because He came to bring true Light into the world, and the world loves darkness, rather than Light, because their deeds are evil(John 3:19). The one thing the entire human race hates is exposure. We will do anything to hide our sin, our greed, our prejudice, our lust, our hate, and these are the greatest of all oppressors. Yet we pet them because they belong to us, and we harbor great love for them.

This Son of the Living God was indeed executed, but three days later He stepped out of that Tomb, defeating sin, death, the grave and hell, itself. And He had the audacity to declare that “…because I live, ye shall live also…”(John 14:19). And through the succeeding centuries of time, He has given that Life, that Liberty to untold millions of starving human hearts, simply because those hearts turned to Him in simple faith, asking forgiveness for sin, and He literally changed their lives and their destinies. What greater freedom can there be?

So, where does His freedom fit into the longing of the entire human race, desiring everyday, political freedom? Here we are, fighting brutal wars, to gain liberty for ourselves, our families, our descendants, and all the while, this Son of the Living God offers an even greater freedom simply by asking for it. What is wrong with this picture?

Absolutely nothing is wrong with it. Even though we may be set free from the oppression of sin, we still don’t like to live under tyrants and are still willing to fight, even die, for our human freedoms. That great longing of the human heart is still alive and well in our lives. We want to be totally free, we want our children and grandchildren to grow up under true freedom, to pursue their heart’s desire in life, based on their skills, their initiative, their ingenuity.

Now, while this Son still promises, and, indeed, still gives His liberty to the human heart, national leaders are trying to destroy the personal liberties that have been fought, and died for by so many of our brave heroes. Are we going to sit idly by while they erase all of history’s efforts? We desperately need the freedom provided for us by that Cross and that empty Tomb, but we still want to move about our lives, free from the would-be tyrants efforts.

So, what can we everyday Americans do to defeat these insane efforts? First and foremost, know that we have been set free from our own sin by this Blessed Son, and that our destiny is in the Eternal Heaven of God. Second, we can instill some courage and convictions into our own lives. Stand up for individual liberty, be sure that we are registered to vote, pick our candidate wisely based on his/her voting record, then simply go vote. And then, if, and when, that person violates the trust we put in him/her by voting, vote again, this time to throw him/her out of office.

Let’s do away with career politicians. We have that power,  so let us exercise that power. Let them know that they work for us, we don’t work for them. That mentality has gone on for far too long. They don’t deserve to be left in office. That office does not belong to them, it belongs to us. Let’s send that message, loud and clear.

So if, like me, you love this country, let’s join together and reclaim our country from it’s oppressors!!
